We are a full month into summer break and I finally feel like we have settled into a nice routine. I try not to keep our days too scheduled or jam-packed but I do like a bit of structure. The boys, especially Connor do so much better with structure, too. I also think it is important to keep up with all the learning that happened during the school year. So today I am sharing with you what we do each day for some summer learning at home.
SUMMER LEARNING AT HOME
The boys each have a couple of workbooks that we use daily. These books were recommended by Connor’s teacher and I really like them. They do a few sheets each day.
Workbook for K-1 | Workbook for 1-2 | Workbook for 2-3 | Workbook for 3-4 | Sight Word Practice Page
Noah started to learn sight words in the second semester of preschool and has a huge desire to learn how to read. I bought this workbook to help with sight word practice and we have also started to work with phonogram flashcards. We read for (at least) 20 minutes each day so he is getting lots of sight word practice.
With Connor, in addition to the workbooks, we are also continuing to work through his phonogram flashcards and math facts. And he also reads throughout the day.
So, I just wanted to also add that this doesn’t always work perfectly and some days the boys just do not want to do their workbooks. I am totally ok with that especially if they have been working hard throughout the week. I don’t want this to be a forced, stressful, miserable time. For me, reading together is most important so if we have done that I am ok with skipping everything else every once in a while.
If I notice them being a little hesitant to get to work, I’ll first try to change things up. One thing that almost always works is changing the scenery. We’ll take our workbooks to the library or to Starbucks instead of at home. Or, instead of a sight word worksheet for Noah, I’ll have him write his sight words with bath crayons in the tub or with chalk outside. There are tons of ways to keep your children learning over the summer, just find what works for your kids and your family.
Do you have a routine in place to get in your summer learning at home? What does that look like at your house? Share with me your tips for making summer learning at home fun.
I had to sneak in this shot of Sister. She’s always working her way into the action 🙂
