Like most families, Abe and I are realizing just how quickly our kids are growing up. And we’re also realizing how each week feels absolutely jam-packed full of non-stop busyness. We both have a deep desire to connect with our kids and spend more meaningful time with them, but when?
After sharing our struggle to find time for our family, our friend suggested we implement a weekly family date night. The same night each week that is dedicated to just the 5 of us being together. Having a scheduled weekly date night takes the pressure off of figuring out when we will spend time together. And eliminates the guilt of “Shoot. Another week went by and we didn’t spend any time together”.
Our friend stressed the importance of starting this with our kids now before they’re too much older. They will grow up knowing that Sunday night (or whichever night you select for your family) is already booked. They’ll already know it’s not a night they will be hanging out with friends. They will know it’s family night. I love this idea so much!
So, now that we had when figured out, we needed to figure out what. What were we going to do for our weekly family date night? Dinner and a movie is a good go-to activity. We can get ice cream. Play family games. But what else? How can we use this precious time with our kids to really connect with them? What can we do to create special memories together as a family?

THE ADVENTURE CHALLENGE FAMILY EDITION
WHAT IS THE ADVENTURE CHALLENGE
The Adventure Challenge is a keepsake book filled with 50 surprise scratch-off adventures you have most likely never done before. They have created books with unique adventures for couples, family, friends, and even a solo edition. No matter which book you choose, they all have the same goal: explore outside of your preferred activities, form deeper connections, and create lasting memories.
We were gifted the Family Edition (thank you Adventure Challenge!) and have had so much fun with it! These challenges have been the perfect addition to our weekly family date night.
Directly from the website, because they say it so perfectly: “The Family Edition is an invitation for families who want to leave a legacy of memories with their tribe. For families who believe in living with purpose, intention, connection, creativity, and fun. We’re here to help you obliterate boredom, break out of ruts, discover new favorite traditions, and create those “laugh so hard your face hurts moments” that you’ll tell stories about for years.”
HOW DOES IT WORK
STEP 1: CHOOSE AN ADVENTURE
Above each scratch-off adventure, you will see icons that will give you an idea of how much money the adventure will cost (some are free & some cost up to $50 but all adventures can be modified to fit your budget) when to do the challenge, and how much time the adventure should take. Some challenges have additional icons to give additional hints like if you’ll need to buy supplies, if you should do the adventure indoors or outdoors, if you’ll get messy, or if you need to plan ahead.
Skip around the book and choose an adventure title that sounds exciting and fits within your budget and time frame. The biggest thing to remember is after you scratch off the adventure there are no takebacks! You have to do it. Be sure to check out the icons for hints before scratching off the adventure because once you scratch it off, you’re committing to that adventure.
STEP 2: COMPLETE THE ADVENTURE
Some of the adventures may seem a little silly or out of your comfort zone but that’s part of the fun of this book. You’ll get to push yourself and your family to try something new. Something other than your normal activities. Have fun with it. Your kids are watching you! Let them see you enjoying how it feels to try something new together.
Want to know a secret? I hate dancing. Like, I really hate dancing. The one and only time I have ever danced with Abe was at our wedding.
Want to guess what our very first challenge from this book was? Lip-sync dance battle. Kids versus parents. I really wanted to skip this challenge and just scratch off another one. But, I also really wanted to show my kids that we can do anything even if it feels silly and uncomfortable. And at first, it felt really silly and uncomfortable. Once we got going we were all belly laughing and having so much fun together. Mission completed!
STEP 3: CAPTURE YOUR ADVENTURE
Next to each adventure is a spot to add a photo and a few lines of text. I really, really encourage you to purchase the book & camera set and some Instax film. The book is designed to be a keepsake for your family. Document those fun adventures and the memories you’re making. Fill your book with photos of your family and write about how the adventure went.
