READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY
Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivation program that is celebrated every year on March 2nd- Dr. Seuss’ Birthday! The program was created by the NEA in 1997 to bring awareness to the importance of reading and to motivate children to read every day. Two things I talk about a ton here on the blog!
It is so important that we get our children excited about reading and that is exactly what Read Across America Day is all about that! Working together with the NEA, many schools will plan special activities on this day to celebrate reading.
Read Across America Day is the perfect kick-off to Reading Awareness Month that occurs during the entire month of March.
There is an abundance of research out there that shows that children who read every day are more successful in school.
At the beginning of the school year, Noah came home with a handout with interesting statistics from a study published by the American Educational Research Association. The handout says:
A child that reads for 20 minutes a day will:
Read for 3,600 minutes per school year
Read 1,800,000 words a year
Score in the 90th percentile on standardized testing
A child that reads for 5 minutes a day will:
Read for 900 minutes per school year
Read 282,000 words a year
Score in the 50th percentile on standardized testing
A child that reads for 1 minute a day will:
Read for 180 minutes per school year
Read 8,000 words a year
Score in the 10th percentile on standardized testing
For children to do well in school, they need to learn how to read. To learn how to read, they need us to read with them every day starting as early as birth.

When I was little I remember my brother being super into Are You My Mother? Right now, Noah likes Go Gog, Go! And Connor likes Green Eggs and Ham. Do your kids have a favorite Dr. Seuss book? Share it with me in the comments.
